How did you come to train as a pipe fitter?

I was interested in manual work from an early age and the construction industry simply fascinated me. At STRABAG, I found the opportunity to train as a pipe fitter, and that suited my interests perfectly.

Can you tell us a bit more about what exactly you do in your apprenticeship?

As pipe fitters in civil engineering, we lay new pipes or repair old ones to maintain the fresh water system in Berlin. We also take care of sewer work, although that's not my main focus. Basically, we build what leads to the house.

What do you particularly like about this work?

I really like working on larger construction sites, like here at Alexanderplatz. There's a lot of space and the people in my crew are really cool. You meet all kinds of people on construction sites, whether grim or friendly. I'm an open and social person, so I always find friends or people I get on well with.

  • Sometimes we find real gems or even construction work from 200 years ago that is not shown on the plans. Old cable lines are also not uncommon, so we have to pay particular attention to whether they are still intact. It's fascinating what you can discover underground that would otherwise remain invisible.

How important is cleanliness in your job?

Cleanliness is extremely important, especially because we work with fresh water. We always wear new gloves, disinfect the pipes and clean them to ensure that the fresh water is not contaminated.

Finally, why do you like your job so much?

The job is simply fascinating and I really enjoy it. The variety of tasks, the interesting discoveries underground and the cool people I work with make it a great experience. I am literally helping to build the future.
