38 years, countless construction sites, many challenges and innumerable encounters! When Stefan looks back on his time at STRABAG, one thing stands out above all else: the people. Whilst his retirement marks the end of a long career, the mark he has left behind will endure.

The dream of big machines

Even whilst he was still at school, Stefan knew he wanted to become a construction machine operator. He had been fascinated by large machines right from the start.

After his first few jobs, Stefan joined a predecessor company of STRABAG in 1992. He started there as an excavator operator and laid the foundations for his career.

More responsibility, more opportunities

Four years after joining the company, Stefan decided to undertake further training to become a certified foreman. He completed the evening course alongside his day job. Looking back, he is convinced he made the right decision.

In the years that followed, he worked as a foreman on a wide variety of building sites. From motorway projects to town bypasses and service stations: the range of his responsibilities was vast. In the process, he took on increasing responsibility and gained valuable experience in the construction industry.

A decision with far-reaching consequences

The move into the role of training coordinator came about rather by chance. After a difficult period, Stefan had even considered leaving the company.
However, a conversation with his technical director opened up a new prospect for him: becoming a trainer. For Stefan, working with young people quickly evolved from an alternative into a labour of love.

  • Looking after the trainees and taking care of them – that’s simply the best thing of all.

Responsibility for the next generation

Stefan always particularly enjoyed the direct contact with the apprentices. For him, it was about more than just technical training. It was important to him to support young people and offer them guidance.

Over the years, this led to the development of numerous relationships built on trust. Many trainees saw Stefan not only as a point of contact for career-related questions, but also as an important mentor on their journey into working life. Often, they stayed in touch long after their training had finished.

Working together as equals

The world of work has changed noticeably over the past few decades. Stefan has also experienced this change. Whilst the atmosphere on building sites used to be considerably more rough-and-ready, he has always emphasised openness, trust and respect in his work with apprentices. He has always placed particular importance on honest and straightforward interactions.

Every project is a visible success

Despite all the changes in his career, one thing has always remained the same for Stefan: his passion for construction.
He particularly appreciates the fact that the results of his work are visible in the end. Roads, structures and other projects are created through the combined efforts of many people.

  • Seeing what you’ve achieved at the end of the day. That’s something special.

The right choice from day one

If Stefan could give his younger self some advice today, it would be simple: he would follow the same path all over again. Perhaps with a little more composure, but with the same passion.

Stefan’s retirement marks the end of an impressive career. His greatest legacy, however, is not the construction sites where he worked, but the many people he has supported and mentored.
