Between planning, technology and height
Behind every crane lies a plan
He describes his role simply: “We make sure that a construction site is provided with a crane – from planning right through to dismantling.” Behind this statement, however, lies a highly specialised field that presents new challenges every day. As the STRABAG Group’s mechanical engineering service provider, BMTI not only handles the scheduling, hire and maintenance of construction machinery and vehicles, but also brings extensive technical expertise from a wide range of construction and specialist sectors. Crane technology is a key part of this.
Every project starts differently. Sometimes a finished concept is already in place; other times, all we receive is the request: “We need a crane.” Tim and his team then assess the requirements, plan the appropriate solution and organise all the necessary steps, from costing through to final installation. The lead time can range from a few days to more than a year. Once everything is prepared, a standard crane is often up and running after just a single working day.
Precision work at any height
Every crane is designed on a case-by-case basis. Manufacturer’s specifications, technical calculations and the requirements of the construction site determine which components are needed. Tower sections, jibs and other components are assembled using a modular system.
Things get particularly exciting with large-scale projects. Here, it is not only the size of the cranes that increases, but also the complexity of the planning. A current highlight for Tim is the Central Business Tower in Frankfurt. There, one of the cranes being used reaches a tower height of around 205 metres. Projects like this require intensive preparation, precise planning and close coordination between all those involved. It is precisely these challenges that make up a large part of the fascination of his profession.
Never the same and never alone
What Tim particularly values about his job is the variety. No two construction sites are the same, and each one presents new challenges. As well as technical expertise, the role therefore requires creativity, patience and a willingness to keep learning.
Teamwork is just as important. During a crane installation, everyone must know what they have to do. When processes mesh seamlessly and everyone pulls together, solutions emerge that make even complex projects possible.
Anyone working at great heights bears a special responsibility. That is why safety is the top priority during every crane installation. Personal protective equipment and strict safety standards are a matter of course for Tim and his team.
Experience rather than theory
Being a crane expert is not a traditional apprenticeship. Much of what defines the profession isn’t learnt from books, but directly on the job. With every construction site, every project and every new challenge, your experience grows.
That’s why Tim advises young people interested in this field, above all, to be patient and persistent. A technical understanding is important, as is the willingness to keep learning and adapt to new situations.
Anyone who enjoys working as part of a team to develop solutions, taking on responsibility and has a passion for technology is well-suited to this role. For Tim, one thing is clear: you grow into this profession step by step, gaining valuable experience along the way.

Looking ahead, Tim is particularly keen to take on more exciting large-scale and special projects. After all, there’s hardly a better feeling than driving through a city years later, seeing a completed building and being able to say: “I was involved in that project.”
