From the construction site to the museum: a special project for our apprentices

06 Feb 2026
Varied construction sites, practical tasks and exciting projects - this is how Maxim and Shokrullah describe their apprenticeship at STRABAG Rail in the South division in Lauda-Königshofen. Both are in their first year of apprentice and have deliberately opted for a technical apprenticeship: Maxim is learning the trade of bricklayer, Shokrullah is training as a track layer.

The day-to-day apprenticeship is varied. The two are deployed on different construction sites, work at the building yard in Königshofen in between and are constantly getting to know new tasks and processes. It is precisely this variety that makes the apprenticeship so appealing to them.

Learning on the construction site and with machines

Their daily tasks include traditional jobs on the construction site: shoveling, sawing, measuring, laying rails or fastening bolts. Even though some of the work is physically demanding, both are proud of what they achieve together as a team.

There were also special highlights early on in their apprenticeship: both Maxim and Shokrullah were allowed to operate machines such as excavators and wheel loaders - a moment that they particularly remember and shows how practical the apprenticeship at STRABAG is.

A special commitment: cooperation project with the Speyer Museum

A real highlight away from the normal apprentice routine was the assignment at the Technik Museum Speyer. STRABAG is a sponsor and partner of the museum, which is preparing an exhibition on historical railroad technology. Together with their team, the two apprentices traveled to Speyer for a day to play an active role.

On site, they provided rails and sleepers and expertly installed a track yoke in a museum hall, which is intended for a historic Deutsche Bahn rail vehicle.

  • It's worth being open to new things and seizing opportunities. I'm taking the experience I've gained with me for my further education.

Cooperation, new impressions and technical history

In addition to the practical work, there was also plenty of personal interaction during this project. All participants were able to fortify themselves and deepen their cooperation over lunch together. The day ended with a detailed tour of the museum, which left a lasting impression on the two apprentices.

The project not only enabled Maxim and Shokrullah to expand their specialist knowledge, but also to learn how to quickly adapt to new tasks and work together with different specialists. And compared to everyday life on a construction site, there was another advantage, as they noted with a grin: It was warm and dry.

A look into the future

Both have clear goals in mind. Maxim wants to successfully complete his apprenticeship and develop both personally and professionally. Shokrullah also plans to successfully complete his apprenticeship, continue his training in track construction and take on more responsibility later on.

Their advice to anyone considering an apprenticeship in the construction industry is clear: if you enjoy practical work, are a strong team player and have no problem working outdoors, you will find a varied and fulfilling profession here.

  • Even if the work is demanding - in the end you can see what you have created and can be proud of it.
