In 15 months, trainee Daniel traveled across Germany, to Austria and even to Oman. In this interview, he explains why he chose STRABAG PFS, what particularly influenced him and why counting materials on a construction site sometimes teaches you more about project management than any textbook.

Why did you choose STRABAG and the trainee program?

Daniel: After my business studies, I didn't just want to sit down in the next office, I wanted to see more and get an insight into different professions. The STRABAG PFS trainee program was the perfect opportunity for me to experience exactly that. What was particularly exciting was that it made it possible for me to work abroad, which I had been denied during my corona-related studies. And so I traveled all over Germany - and beyond.

What stages did you go through during your trainee program?

Daniel: I gained insights into technology, the surface business, international project management and even the world of bridge construction projects. I went from Bad Hersfeld to Münster, on to Stuttgart, Spittal, back to Bad Hersfeld and then to Oman. The special stops were definitely those abroad.
In Spittal, I went deep into controlling, including system maintenance and cost accounting.

In Oman, on the other hand, I was right in the middle of day-to-day construction site operations in Sultan Haitham City: counting materials, checking incoming goods, coordinating orders - and all this between engineers, suppliers and warehouse logistics. I found the entire process from ordering to booking particularly impressive. And the feeling of being part of a huge international project.

What impressions from Oman do you particularly remember?

Daniel: Everything, and I mean it. The variety of tasks, the people I met and the opportunity to really get involved all left their mark on me. Whether it was operational insights or strategic topics, I was able to get a taste of everything. And that's exactly what makes the trainee program so valuable for me. I was also surprised at how friendly and open the culture is and how differently everyday life works. Shopping in the evening? No problem. In Austria it ends at 7 p.m., but in Oman that's when things really get going.

And what are you doing at STRABAG today?

Daniel: I completed my trainee program in November 2025 and have been working in controlling for insurance customers and institutional investors at STRABAG PFS ever since. It was the right decision and I really enjoy it.

  • The trainee program showed me how diverse STRABAG is - professionally, personally and geographically. I would do it again at any time.
