Creating the field for many touchdowns: Site manager Michael

30 Jun 2025
Flag football is the low-contact version of American football. A performance center with two pitches for one of the world's fastest growing sports was recently completed in Düsseldorf. A conversation with the man behind the project, construction manager Michael.

What was your role in the project?

Michael: I was the site manager and worked with my team to build the two pitches.

What particular challenges did the project present and how were they overcome?

Michael: One particular challenge was the short project duration: we had a total of three months until the completion date.

That sounds like a record. Given this short time frame, what skills were particularly important for the success of the project?

Michael: Clearly good planning: the different trades had to be well coordinated to ensure that everything ran smoothly. The planning of materials and machinery was also important, as both courses were being built in parallel.

  • Work On Progress means personal development and the joint implementation of our projects with all those involved.

Is there anything that makes the project special within STRABAG?

Michael: Yes, it was the first time a flag football pitch was built. Although we build many artificial turf pitches in the sports facility construction sector, which are usually very similar due to standards, one special feature here was the lining of the pitches and the club logos that were applied.

Were there any sustainable aspects to the construction?

Michael: Yes, we reused existing base layers.

When you look back: What was your personal highlight?

Michael: Firstly, the fact that it was the first pitch for this sport. Also the measuring, positioning and applying the logos to the artificial turf.
