Fabian's onboarding at STRABAG - a summary after 6 months
A versatile career path
Fabian's professional journey began in civil engineering: After his apprenticeship, he completed a voluntary social year in the Netherlands, where he discovered his enthusiasm for international environments.
He then started his professional life - first as a project technician for three years and later as a large-scale project manager. In his private life, he has always been interested in communication, social media, writing and creative work. When he finally saw the right job advertisement from STRABAG, it quickly became clear to him: this could be the perfect match.
The application process was quick and transparent, and the on-site interview immediately created a good atmosphere. He was accepted after just two weeks. It was clear to Fabian that he wanted to seize this opportunity.
Diverse tasks between technology, communication and international exchange
Today, Fabian is responsible for the internal communication of his directorate: he writes articles for the intranet and the newsletter, prepares technical topics in an understandable way and is the contact person for employees and external contacts.
He combines his technical expertise with strong communication skills, explaining even complex topics such as drinking water and wastewater treatment in an understandable way.
A particular highlight: he is currently designing a new website for his directorate, including his own photo shoot at a wastewater treatment plant.
Onboarding as a success factor
Fabian's start at STRABAG was structured and full of practical experience. He started his first days together with two new colleagues from the process engineering department. A nice coincidence for him, as they were able to exchange ideas at any time and navigate the many new terms, abbreviations and processes together.
He was given a schedule during preboarding, which gave him a sense of security. One thing in particular then became apparent during onboarding: time and support. Everyone took plenty of time for explanations, presentations and even small water experiments to clearly convey the content of the management.
His first week at the company was a particular highlight for Fabian. On the first day, he got to know his colleagues in the Vienna office before going on a business trip to the department event in Prague on the second day. During this trip, he also visited a wastewater treatment plant, where he gained fascinating insights into the biological processes involved in water purification.
In the months that followed, the induction process continued step by step. Fabian was able to give feedback at any time and took part in networking formats. His most important learning: "We can all learn an incredible amount from each other."
Fabian's conclusion after 6 months & a look into the future
Fabian had respect before the start: how will he find his way around? How familiar can a large company be? But this worry was immediately dispelled: a young, open team, shared lunches, transparent communication and support in every situation made it easy to get started. His summary is clear: he learned a lot, got to know great people and is well networked.
Fabian wants to make the Water Directorate even more visible, because water is a key issue for the future for him. With his work, he is helping to spread knowledge and solutions within the organization.
