International training: Lennart's internship abroad in Malta

09 Dec 2025
Lennart started his apprenticeship as an industrial clerk at STRABAG in August 2024. He is currently in his second year of training and has already experienced a special highlight: a multi-week internship abroad in Malta. We spoke to him about his training, his time abroad and his plans for the future.

Lennart, how did you come to STRABAG and what stages have you gone through in your training so far?

Lennart: I actually came to STRABAG more by chance. I found road construction interesting in principle, but didn't actively focus on the industry. At the job interview, everything fell into place and the personal interaction convinced me. As my father and uncle are already industrial clerks, I had an early insight into this profession and found it very exciting. After an internship at my uncle's company, I knew that this was the right path for me.

I was able to get to know different areas during my apprenticeship. I started in equipment accounting, where I worked a lot with our internal software program. That was very exciting, but also challenging because it differs from traditional SAP. I then moved on to accounts receivable and then to accounts payable. I was able to learn a lot of new things in accounting in particular, both technically and in terms of structured work.

You had the opportunity to complete an internship abroad in Malta. How did this come about and what exactly did you do there?

Lennart: The internship was organized via Erasmus+ in cooperation with my vocational school, and I knew immediately that I wanted to take advantage of this opportunity. I wanted to gain international practical experience and prove myself in a new environment. I received great support from STRABAG and my team leader. I couldn't choose the host country myself, but Malta was a stroke of luck - warm temperatures, nice people and an exciting working environment.

I was accommodated together with a fellow student from the vocational school and we worked at YIAMAS Food & Beverages Operations Limited, which operates two Greek restaurants on the island. We mainly worked in administration, which is exactly the area that is important for my apprenticeship. It was particularly exciting that the tasks and processes were very similar to those in Germany. At the same time, communicating in English in everyday working life boosted my self-confidence enormously.

What impressed you most about your time in Malta and what do you take away from it personally?

Lennart: The most impressive thing for me was the practical experience. We worked directly in the restaurant warehouse, counted stock and planned the procurement for the coming week, which was very instructive.

I also grew personally. Working abroad, communicating in English and being able to cope independently in everyday working life really boosted my self-confidence. After work, we went to the beach almost every day because it was only a few minutes away. That was of course a nice side effect. We also had time to explore the island at the weekend. My highlights included the boat trips to the Blue Lagoon and the Crystal Lagoon.

  • I found it fascinating to see that similar systems and processes are sometimes used in another country, just in a different language.

What tips would you recommend to others who are also planning an internship abroad? And how would you like to continue your career at STRABAG?

Lennart: I can really recommend an internship abroad to everyone. Be open, go in with motivation and don't be afraid to approach new people.

I'm now looking forward to the next departments for my further training: Purchasing, Human Resources, Costing and Payroll. I want to successfully complete my training and can imagine possibly going on to study. The most important thing for me is to keep an open mind and take advantage of every opportunity that arises.

  • For me, it was one of the most valuable experiences ever - professionally, linguistically and personally.
