Responsibility knows no bounds

To many people, ‘compliance’ initially sounds like rules, guidelines and legal texts. At STRABAG, however, there is much more to it than that: international cooperation, cultural understanding and day-to-day interaction with people on construction sites and in offices around the globe.

Working together to find solutions

The Compliance Team supports colleagues worldwide in making the right decisions in their day-to-day work. This involves issues such as the prevention of corruption, competition law, and the handling of and compliance with internal guidelines.

STRABAG currently operates in numerous countries. The Compliance Team’s work is correspondingly international. The compliance officers support various divisions of the company, maintaining regular contact with colleagues from Canada to Europe, Australia and the Middle East.

In-person visits to sites are particularly important. Only those who understand the reality of working on construction sites and on projects can realistically assess risks and offer appropriate support.

  • Our focus is not on finding faults, but on working together to find solutions.

Understanding cultures, building trust

One of the greatest challenges in an international environment is the diversity of cultures, languages and working practices. The compliance team alone covers around twelve Group languages. Nevertheless, it takes far more than language skills to work together successfully.  Empathy, tact and an understanding of local circumstances play a crucial role. After all, compliance only works when people build trust and raise any concerns at an early stage.

That is why compliance officers invest a great deal of time in face-to-face discussions, training sessions and building long-term relationships. The aim: a strong compliance culture in which employees themselves develop a keen sense of what constitutes the right decisions.

  • We need to understand the work our colleagues do in order to know where we can help.

A glimpse into the STRABAG galaxy

For many in the team, travelling is a particular highlight. Among other things, Sarah oversees projects in the UK, Australia, Canada and the Middle East

A trip to Oman has remained particularly memorable for her. During a drive through the seemingly endless desert, she was shown the construction projects planned for the future there. Sarah is looking forward to returning there to see how the region has developed.

Compliance provides insights into the full breadth of the Group.  It becomes clear time and again just how diverse STRABAG’s operations are. Different business areas, countries and cultures come together to create a working environment that constantly opens up new perspectives.

  • You can see just how big STRABAG is and the scale on which we operate. We then get a view of the entire STRABAG galaxy.

The human factor

Despite the international nature of the role and the technical challenges, the compliance team members repeatedly cite the same key factor for success: people.

For Samira, who has been part of the team since 2025, the best part is therefore the interaction with people. She particularly enjoys the moment when colleagues gain confidence and come to her directly with their questions

Anyone wishing to work in this field needs not only a legal or business understanding, but above all communication skills, empathy and a willingness to understand different perspectives. After all, successful compliance arises when people work together to find solutions.
