From working student to project engineer: Nathalie's path at STRABAG

28 May 2025
Nathalie shows how studying and professional development can be combined in the STRABAG Group, including varied projects and real responsibility.

Since joining STRABAG Baumaschinentechnik International (BMTI) as a working student, Nathalie has continued on her path. Today, she works as a project engineer in refurbishment, conversion and new construction projects from concept development to implementation. She is not only responsible for technical processes, but also actively promotes digital and sustainable solutions.

Nathalie's path to an engineering degree and to STRABAG BMTI

Nathalie started with an apprenticeship as a real estate agent and then decided to study civil engineering—without a high school diploma, but with ambition. Because it was clear to her that only with a degree she could take on the responsibility she wanted. The opportunity for her working student job at STRABAG BMTI came about by chance, and was a perfect fit.

  • I am gaining valuable professional experience and am now taking on more responsibility than would have been possible in my role as a working student.

Today, Nathalie is a part-time project engineer and is studying for a Master's degree at the same time. This is how individual a career in the STRABAG Group can be.

Diversity, responsibility and further development

Another plus from the project engineer's point of view: the STRABAG Group invests in the further development of its employees. This includes training, new technologies and room for personal development.

Whether it's a workshop conversion, heating system replacement or new construction planning: Nathalie manages projects from the initial idea through to implementation. Her tasks range from concept development and coordination with specialist departments to monitoring construction progress on site. She uses digital tools to efficiently prepare project information and optimize project communication.

  • I really appreciate the opportunity to develop my individual skills and complete training courses. Because this allows me to put theoretical knowledge directly into practice.

Sustainability as an everyday challenge

Many of STRABAG BMTI's projects also focus on sustainability. In older workshops, this can be associated with technical hurdles, for example when installing photovoltaic systems or innovative heating systems.

  • Implementing climate-friendly solutions in existing buildings is often not easy. But that's exactly what makes it exciting.

Standards are also set for new projects: Nathalie is currently supporting the conversion of a large workshop to a heating system based on renewable fuels for the first time, a milestone that shows how the future can become a reality.

Step by step, the entire workshop portfolio is also to be adapted to the current sustainability standards. Last year, Nathalie developed a digital, interactive overview for this purpose, which transparently shows the sustainability status of the individual workshops and serves as the basis for further measures.

Progress begins with curiosity

For Nathalie, Work On Progress is more than just a slogan, it's her daily reality. New technologies, legal requirements and complex refurbishment projects constantly demand new solutions. And that is exactly what motivates her.

Whether as a working student, career starter or today as a project engineer: Nathalie has shown that progress begins with openness and commitment, and that there is room for this in the STRABAG Group.
